I've literally just bought Guild Wars this morning (the original) - any blindingly obvious tips for a beginner or solid classes to start as?

Coincidentally, i'm also a couple of hours away from finishing FF8. good game, gets a bit of a harsh rep these day, I guess because it's really unbalanced (you can be basically invincible by the start of disc 2) but fun anyway.

Yeah that was the only trouble with FF8. I had Squall's Lionheart by the first time you visit Timber. It involves running around on a beach looking for super-rare turtles to morph for hours on end and a few hundred (literally) card games with the little kid in balamb but you can eventually get the items to make his final weapon. Also, focus all your efforts on getting 100x Death magic and junction that to pre-emptive attack and you can kill the t-rex's in the training centre in one hit for approx. 900 exp meaning you gain a level every 2 fights and pretty soon every player on the game is lv. 100.

Brilliant game though and it still looks impressive at times. Didn't like the bit where you go to space because it was a complete and utter ballache but other than that it's superb. I could never be arsed with getting chocobo's on it though. On 7 I had a stable full of golds but all that chocobo forest, whistling bullshit was boring.

haha ffs, there's broken and there's broken, wp liam the card game is quite fun but you can win good enough cards on disc 1 (mainly off that robin williams-looking motherfucker) that you basically never lose unless there's crazy rules active. has dated far better than FF7 imo, which has a lot going for it but some of the worst graphics on the PS1 vs some of the best, an incoherent plot even by the standards of japanese rpgs, and a ton of shitty, shitty minigames (has anyone ever enjoyed having Cloud go snowboarding? even for a second?


edit: should really have mentioned Football Manager Live in the games i'm playing, it's good fun and waaaaay more polished than FM09. a bit overpriced at the moment, basically the same subscription cost as WoW and its competitors, without as much to do, but worth a look if it comes down in price at all (I get it for £3 a month for a year because I tested it - can't recommend it at current full price tho)

My mate Hippo used to play the snowboarding game and was pretty good at it. Other than the time you have to do it where i'd only hold the controller because I had to go the right way to get Alexander materia, I never played it. I played chocobo racing to death though. That bastard Joe and his black chocobo used to drive me mad. As for other mini-games, I did the Mog game at the golden saucer once just because if you do it right the kid behind you gives you loads of free GP. My mate was really good at the basketball game as well and got about 200 in in a row. you win tons of GP for doing that but I could never be arsed.

My geekiness on 7 is far greater than 8. I bought the costa del sol mansion the first time you visit the town. Also always bought a lifetime pass to Gold Saucer the first time I ever went there. And I killed the Midgar Zolem before going through the tunnel where you get the cutscene showing Sephiroth has killed him

My greatest shame is having Meteorain before Kalm. Oh and beating Emerald Weapon using a complex system of Mime's, final attacks and KOTR to the point where I fixed myself a sandwich mid-fight and didnt take 1 point of damage from him. Ruby was always slightly harder as you had to kill 2 of your men before the battle even started but I got the fucker. The reward being a gold chocobo though?? You pretty much need KOTR to beat the fucker and you cant possibly get that without a gold chocobo so that was probably the worst prize ever.

(I say, having spent about 2 hours this morning coming up with ludicrously contrived ways of exploiting Final Fantasy 6 :( )

The graphics on 6 were just a bit too bad that I couldnt really get into it. I tried for an hour or so but it didnt have the charm that 7 had.

My mate Iain couldn't get past the first screen of FF7 He borrowed it for 2 weeks and got stuck on "c'mon newcomer, follow me!" What an idiot. He couldn't find his way off the screen once he had killed the 2 guards (and stolen their potions hopefully). Pressing "select" was apparantly too difficult for him.

Bought my dad this (and an extra controller) for Christmas so have played it quite a bit...



And have been playing this as a family over Christmas

FF7 has graphics so poor (mainly on the sprites) you often can't tell what's going on, while FF6 is one of the nicest-looking games on a 16-bit console (so much so that it's been rereleased twice on more modern consoles without any graphical changes, whereas FF7, which would sell a fuckton, they seem to be saving for when they can do it justice with a total overhaul)
