I can never decide which I prefer, I guess it changes with my mood. Rod admitted that when writing the earlier songs, the aim was to just make as much noise as possible.

I would agree that lyrically the more recent stuff is better, Warnings/Promises and Make Another World have some of the best lyrics I've ever heard.
