The familiar sound of John Westwood's bell will no longer ring out at Fratton Park because of a row over stewarding.
The super Pompey fan walked out of the club's first home game of the season against Manchester United after stewards told him to keep quiet and to stop ringing his bell so loudly as it was disturbing other fans.

The club had moved John, and his drum to the back of the stand, in order to keep the stairwell clear.

He has also been told that if he continues to stand up he could receive a lifetime ban.

He told The News: 'This whole standing issue is a control thing. They are taking the enjoyment away from fans.

This is my life – all I want to do is support the club. These fans live and breathe Portsmouth Football Club.

'We will leave the instruments at home for a few matches and see how things go.'

Gary Double, club spokesman, said: 'We didn't ask him to leave. It was probably pressure from other fans.

'He wasn't told by our security to leave or to stop ringing the bell or to stop banging the drums.

'But everyone is told to sit down. You are not allowed to stand in the stadium.'

The fans who have a problem with the bell must have been aware of John's "musical talents" ;-) so as far as i'm concerned, if you buy a ticket / season ticket in that stand, you can expect to hear his "ensemble" playing. To be honest when you hear it on TV / PFCTv it makes me smile! Pompey security/ complaining supporters etc .... GET A LIFE this makes our club different to all of the other sterile supporters in the league!
If you don't like it then sit somewhere else....

Bollocks to that! Rivalry aside, they're still a rotten club with plastic fans (can't even fill their tiny, decrepid old ground, which is right in the middle of the one of the shittiest districts of one of the worst cities in the country!).

I've seen about 15 teams at the lane and that lot's fans were among the loudest ones only beaten by the hammers and newcastle. They didn't have much faith in variation though "play up pompey, pompey play up"....

Redknapp must be a living legend in that town, he's done everything right both at portsmouth and at southampton from their pov.

like all Redknapp's past clubs, they're losing cash hand over fist at a completely unsustainable rate. I'm pretty confident that like all his past clubs they'll go into total financial meltdown sooner rather than later

It's usually not the managers job to watch the finances. It's the chairman/board who have to determine the transfer budget and decide where to raise money from.

absolutely, but the chief executive at Portsmouth is Peter Storrie, an old mate of Harry Redknapp's whose similar role at West Ham (acting as a supposedly unbiased between 'Arry and his coaches and the Chairman whose football knowledge is very rudimentary) cost them millions and millions of pounds on absolute dross (including 6-figure fees to Harry's preferred agents) who he would discard after >10 games and demand a replacement be signed. Terry Brown at West Ham eventually realised what a con artist Redknapp was and showed him the door, Gaydamak knows less again about footballing matters AND has enough money to have a fairly casual approach towards spending big money. Harry is somewhat charismatic and has a ton of contacts in the game and the media who will stick up for him, so tends to get his own way on dubious-looking transfer dealings anyway, doubly so when one of his cronies has one hand on the purse-strings. You'll notice that since just before Muntari was sold, Harry has been coming out to his press mates on average once a week to complain about lack of funds available to him, needing to make '3 or 4 quality signings' etc, complaining when 'having' to sell useful backup players like Pedro Mendes. The fact is that Portsmouth's bloated wage bill is one of the highest, and the fastest rising by a mile outside the top 4, and those figures are BEFORE the signings of G.Johnson, Defoe, Crouch, Muntari, Diarra (who is on about £55k p/w, for example) and is losing them £20m or so a year before you even take into account the upcoming expense of a new stadium. Redknapp is a decent manager, but he has always used the goodwill from his initial success and reputation as a wheeler-dealer with an eye for a bargain to just use his clubs, where he's almost unsackable, as a base to buy and sell players beyond all logic or financial reason. all the more inexplicable transfers and some of the bigger ones have a portion of the fee that is never accounted for, most of these use agents such as Willie McKay. He has also consistently and vocally opposed all investigation into corruption of either particular agents and managers and the wider world of English football - even those that have no connection to him or his cohorts. Titi Camara, Marco Boogers, Collins Mbesuma, Raggy Soma, the literal kidnapping of Amdy Faye - i'd eat my hat if Redknapp and Storrie weren't directly profiting from most of those deals and many others (e.g his demanding from Brown the money to sign Gary Charles, than weeks later demanding money for a better right back as Charles 'obviously' wasn't good enough). The man is the single most corrupt active manager since the days of Cloughie and brown paper bags in service stations
